| + | This is probably the main method of contact with the outside world...I don't know if I really want to think about this since I feel like it would quite quickly expose the nature of the funnel if people could be outside of the safe zone, but at the same time it's hard to come up with a capitalist setting without some kind of trade with the outside world/outsiders enabling it. The only other solution I can think of is that other places also use similar technology and they're all in cahoots with each other to push the idea that this technology is absolutely necessary to survive.Though of course there are probs some miscellaneous communities that don't have contact with the big cities who are living perfectly okay lives out there, that are treated like myths. No one lives out there man...it's a dead zone... | ||

some questions to consider about the setting
- do other places have a soul generator
- yes and it's run by the same people
- some governmental conspiracy stuff going down
- why is this being kept a secret
- weird ethical dilemma vs money
- we can't let the internet know
- the people who know cannot talk about it - why?
- the people who can talk about it aren't believed - for obvious reasons that most people can't see anything
- the people who are most able to talk about it (the Revs) can't talk about it - under heavy security
- could there conceivably be an opposing group that isn't exactly representative of spirits in general, but takes advantage of spiritual energy/supernatural occurrences to launch attacks on the system (kaii vibes...)

Main generator
Central in the city, which is pretty unusual for a power generator. I might actually shift it to the outskirts since it does seem pretty weird to do a generator in the middle of the city, but I like it being a central structure, just a hole in the middle of the city that was built up around it. Also it does make it easier to explain why some areas are just Safe most of the time.
Maybe the funnel can be there, but the electrical structures (the parts that take the generated energy and send them out to people's homes) are further away. There are tunnels underground that connect them.
Zone 1
Nearest to the generator, safest area. Business, government and rich people houses, especially the people who run the town.
Zone 2
Slightly further away from the generator. Residential areas. Weird stuff happens here. It's still fairly safe, but such things that tease the supernatural (e.g. summoning rituals) can have devastating consequences. Of course...not all the time. A lot of the serious ones are hushed up, and sometimes it just doesn't happen, which makes people want to tempt fate more, I guess.
Zone 3
The outskirts. Industrial and agricultural. Filled with large and strange technology. Some of this stuff still works, and is powered by the funnel - used for manufacturing. The amount of resources that can still be used is quite large, so there's no worry about it depleting for a long time. Even so, precious resources should be conserved. This is where new Rev skeletons are produced. As the tech is advanced, these can be custom-built.
Farming is done out here. It's partially managed by the tech, but still requires human overseers.
The edges blend into wild forest. If weird stuff happens in zone 2, even weirder stuff happens here; it's said to be extremely unsafe to do anything that involves going into the forest, hanging out in fields at night, etc. Even remaining within the industrial zones can be dangerous - the liminal spaces make it difficult to recognise when something is wrong, and people often go missing here.
Beyond
There isn't a strict line that demarcates the outer extent of zone 3, so the border is just pretty much "what would affect people living in zone 3". Revs don't patrol here as it has no purpose, and is a waste of resources due to the danger. This is the outer edges of the suction zone - there's a spike in supernatural events within this rim for several kilometres much like a barrier, but after that, the danger drops dramatically due to the lack of ectoplasmic agitation (which means fewer supernatural events). Of course, the people don't know this.
Unsure whether Iris should be based inside the danger zone, or outside of it. I do feel it makes sense for them to live outside of it and pick off the danger zone for souls to consume (with a certainty of being able to pass through the barrier safely), though it's pretty cool if they've learnt to live with the danger.
